Unfortunately, it just didn't knock my socks off. It's an important piece in the trilogy and certainly needed to understand the plot developments that will occur in Sweet Legacy. Of course, it's a super creepy killer mermaid, but merfolk all the same! If you are a fan of this series, you'll probably enjoy Sweet Shadows. There is also a mermaid sighting in the Abyss. TLC also subtly weaves other stories from mythology into the subplots and minor characters (we meet a unicorn and a pegasus in this book).
The story line of Medusa's descendants being in charge of protecting a magic portal in one-of-a-kind. Tera Lynn Childs does a great job with infusing the mythology in this series. The jury is still out on my overall feelings toward Nick and Thane. Obviously, the three sisters are the focus of the book- which is a good thing. I liked seeing her become more approachable and human-like. Yes, grumpy loner Gretchen develops a soft spot. The characters stay the same for the most part. Nothing spectacular, but certainly needed to move the story along. It just ended up being a typical second book in a series. Now, don't go thinking that I didn't enjoy this book. I had such high hopes, which has left me a tiny bit disappointed. Yes, this book took a twist that I didn't expect, but it still ended up being pretty predictable. I was right, even if we don't know what his role is yet or not. At the end of Sweet Venom, I knew there was something important about Thane's disappearance. I am going to start by saying most of my original predictions for this book turned out to be true. I didn't like the cliffhanger ending but am lucky to have book 3 ready to finish the story.Recommended for young adults who like mythology and urban fantasy. I liked that Gretchen got an attitude adjustment when she entered the Abyss. The girls need to learn about their various gifts, rescue their missing mentors, and decide which of the boys around them is on their side. Greer is the poor little rich girl who has every physical advantage and absentee parents. Gretchen is the one who ran away from an abusive home life and has been fighting the monsters who slip through the cracks for years. Grace is the computer nerd with a loving family. The third group wants them to open the portal and act as its guardians.The story is told in alternate chapters by each of the girls who are very different people.
There is a group that wants them dead after they seal the portal and a group that wants them dead after they open the portal. There are three factions who are interested in them with two of the factions wanting them dead. They were reunited at sixteen to find out that they were descendants of Medusa and heirs to a prophecy that keeps mythological creatures contained in the Abyss. Triplets Gretchen, Grace, and Greer were separated at birth and raised in separate families and circumstances.
